Some helpful retirement information from our UniServe director!
All of the insurance plans offered through NEA require NEA membership—NEA Group Term Life, NEA Level Premium Life, NEA Guaranteed Issue Life, NEA Accident and Injury Plan—and all of the NEA Accidental Death & Dismemberment plans. Retired members also often enroll in Medicare supplement insurance and can also access the other NEA member benefits like travel discounts etc.
It is also worth noting that, unfortunately, sometimes our retired members find out that there have been mistakes in NHRS enrollment or contributions that require legal assistance to rectify. We have been all the way to the NH Supreme Court on some cases where retired members’ lifetime pension benefits were impacted. Our attorneys cannot represent anyone who has had a gap in membership, per our representation policy. So retirees in those cases were either represented by us as a benefit of their retired membership or had to pay out of pocket for their own attorneys.
Also, if retirees ever want to work as substitutes, the liability insurance would cover them if they are retired members. It also covers them if they want to hang on to their teaching credentials in case they change their mind and want to go back into the field, in case there is a late complaint at the DOE. It sounds crazy but we’ve had complaints against members that come to light as late as 18 months after the incident that is the subject of the complaint, which can impact their DOE certification. If they’re still members, even retired members, our attorneys can represent them at the DOE to defend their credentials and the EEL liability insurance policy can cover them if there is a criminal complaint or potential for civil legal exposure.
Quick Facts!
⭐ Did you know you have access to member benefits and discounts? Go to Teacher Benefits and Discounts Exclusively for Members | NEA Member Benefits (neamb.com) to find out more! Save money on travel, car purchases, insurance and much more.
If you have to take a leave, you can have Reserve membership (a discounted rate) to maintain your benefits. Just contact our Membership Chair!
💵💵💵 Members can switch their membership from the payroll deduction option to Easy Pay (withdrawal straight from bank account). You can do this at NEA-NH, or contact our Membership Chair. This can actually give the CVEA more power during negotiations by limiting the information the SAU has about how many members are in our organization!
You should not have to pay for damaged, or old faulty key cards!!!
